*Suspect pleads not guilty
*NBA President and Lagos AG witness proceedings
Lagos– Suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi, was today arraigned for the alleged murder of a Lagos-based lawyer, Mrs. Omobolanle Raheem, on Christmas Day.
The Lagos State Attorney-General (AG) and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyo Onigbanjo, SAN, arraigned Vandi at the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on a one-count charge of murder.
The charge, dated December 28, 2022 and marked LD/20598c/22, alleged that Vandi killed Raheem contrary to Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. It read;
ASP Vandi on the 25th of December 2022 at Ajah roundabout along Lekki-Epe Expressway Lagos in the Lagos Judicial Division unlawfully killed one Omobolanle Raheem (F) by shooting her in the chest,
The Defendant; ASP Vandi pleaded not guilty.
The arraignment was delayed due to the absence of the Vandi’s Counsel Mr. Adetokunbo Odutola who later showed up at past 11 a.m.
One of the two prosecution witnesses; Mr. Matthew Ameh, testified that he, prosecution witness, Mr. Ebimini (both Police Inspectors) and Vandi were on stop and search Under the Ajah Bridge when Vandi who was in charge of the team opened fire on Raheem’s car, killing her in the process.
He testified that on that faithful day, he was stationed at the front, while Ebimini was in the Middle and Vandi at the back. He testified that the car failed to stop when flagged down by him, Ebimini and Vandi who eventually shot at the vehicle, killing Mrs. Raheem.
Following partial cross-examination by Vandi’s counsel, Mr. Adetokunbo Odutola, the judge acceded to Mr. Onigbanjo’s prayer for an accelerated hearing of the case. Justice Harrison adjourned further proceedings till January 25 and 26.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President; Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, who has been very vocal in condemning the extrajudicial murder of Omobolanle Raheem also a member of the NBA, was also in court to witness the proceedings.
